2025 federal election: Greens name candidate for Kennedy
Tablelands resident Carole Stanford will fly the Greens flag in this year's federal election.

The Queensland Greens have announced Carole Stanford as its candidate for Kennedy at the upcoming federal election.
Ms Stanford is a science educator who has taught chemistry and computing in high schools and universities. She lives on the Atherton Tablelands.
“I’m running for Kennedy to give voters a positive, progressive choice at this election and to be a champion for the community, not vested interests,” Ms Stanford said.
The candidate said she would be campaigning on cost of living, housing and climate change.
“The people of Kennedy are struggling under the weight of a rising cost of living, homelessness, and climate crisis that is affecting our water and food production and causing extreme conditions across our region,” she said.
“As a Greens candidate, I am campaigning to stop supermarket price gouging, cap rents and deliver cheaper mortgages for those in housing stress, and to make big corporations pay their fair share in tax so we can fund free GP visits and dental and mental health into Medicare.
“We need to tackle the climate crisis by stopping new coal and gas production and rapidly transitioning to renewable energy, which will create long-term, clean jobs for our region.”
Senator Larissa Waters, who is running for re-election to the Senate, praised Ms Stanford as a hardworking community and environment advocate.
“Carole will always put the interests of the community above the interests of big corporations and billionaires,” she said.
“With a likely minority government, the Greens will deliver dental and mental health into Medicare and take strong action to combat our housing and climate crisis.
“More Greens in Parliament will keep Dutton out and get Labor to act.”
LABOR STILL SILENT
With incumbent Kennedy MP Bob Katter intending to run again and the LNP candidate already on the hustings, it leaves just Labor as the only major party without a candidate in the electorate.
Party members told North West Weekly that an announcement was expected “within days”.
Innisfail-based Annette Swain will represent the LNP in Kennedy, while the Family First Party has named Douglas Lush as its candidate.
Clive Palmer’s new party, the Trumpet of Patriots, is also expected to name a candidate in the North West Queensland seat.
