History repeated itself at the Mount Isa Golf Club on the weekend as Scott Sibson and Kate Chadwick once again won the men’s and women’s championships at the City of Mount Isa Open.

For Home Hill visitor Sibson, an accountant who loves golf, it was a chance to test his skills over four days that made him make the long drive to the Outback.

“You’ve got to come back to defend your title but it’s good fun to come out here,” he said.

“It’s the only four-day Open in North Queensland that I know of.

“I don’t even know if there’s any four-day Opens in Queensland anymore.

“They’re mostly two-day Opens now – some play three.

“It’s good to come out and see the people out here that you met the first time. Everybody makes you feel welcome out here.”

Sibson had a two-shot lead over local hope Sam Broom for most of the last round until he edged clear in the late stages to win by five strokes, finishing -1 for the event.

For perennial local champion Chadwick, she was pleased to play mostly good golf across the three-day women’s Open.

“The first two rounds were good but today was just a bit rough,” she said after carding 76, 75 and then 82 on Sunday.

“I had a nine on the 11th so that didn’t help things.”

Chadwick was a runaway winner of the women’s gross event, but said the camaraderie on the course was the reason she played.

“On Sunday, I played in a group of four Kiwis, which was pretty awesome,” said the New Zealander, who now calls Mount Isa home.
