Queensland Treasurer and Energy Minister David Janetzki has reaffirmed his position on CopperString’s future after a tour of the North West.

Mr Janetzki travelled along the Flinders and Barkly Highways from Townsville to Mount Isa to speak with councils and key stakeholders.

“I did this journey to provide tangible physical support for delivering copper string all the way from Townsville to Mount Isa,” he said from Mount Isa on Thursday morning.

“Last month’s budget, we invested a record $2.4 billion into the project. And I want to make it clear to the communities of the North and the North West that CopperString will be built.

“As I’ve gone along the line and met mayors in Julia Creek, Charters Towers, in Cloncurry, at Hughenden, the message has been clear – CopperString is coming and we are determined that it hooks up renewable resources, mineral resources and the economic opportunities that they bring to the North West. It’s fitting that we’re ending here.”

Mr Janetzki said there was plenty of economic growth that would be powered by the 800km transmission line that connects the region to the National Energy Market.

“I stopped near Hughenden at Windlab at Kennedy Energy Park. They’ve got plenty of wind online there,” he said.

“At Julia Creek, they’ve got seven vanadium mines potentially coming through.”
