Yallambee Aboriginal Culture & Community Advancement hosted Glencore officials at a morning tea last week to thank the mining giant for its $120,000 donation to purchase a bus used for school drop off and pick up.

The bus has been central to the growth of the community-led initiative to increase school participation. Only three students attended school at the beginning of the program but that has grown to 20.

YACCA treasurer Kelly McNamara said the program had humble beginnings with her eight-seater Toyota Prado used as the sole transport vehicle during the pilot program stage.

Ms McNamara said she had to manage trips to seven different schools for the first 18 months of the trial program in that single vehicle.

Following the donation of the Glencore funding and further assistance from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, there are now two buses that can transport up to 22 community members at a time.

“The bus is being used for all our programs in the community and it has been a great assistance to us,” Ms McNamara said.
