Golden Gloves success for Mount Isa locals
Four fighters took top honours at the recent Golden Gloves event in Townsville.

Mount Isa is fast regaining its reputation for turning out some of the toughest fighters in the state, with four young boxers making a clean sweep at the 2025 Queensland Golden Gloves.
The boys are now eyeing off state and national titles.
Brothers in Arms fighters Lincoln Peterson, Taiarn Yasserie and Rashard Radcliffe, as well as Jack Wehrman, won each of the four divisions on offer at the Golden Gloves tournament in Townsville, which attracted boxers from Brisbane to Weipa.
Peterson took out the 81kg junior division; Yasserie took out the 63kg juniors; Radcliffe won the 51kg junior division and Wehrman took out the welterweight senior medal.
Yasserie was also awarded the top junior fighter, while Wehrman took out the top senior fighter from the 110 boxers competing at the tournament.
The remarkable result comes on the back of strong community support for a fight night in Mount Isa earlier this month, which raised money to help fund the young boxers travel to the Townsville event.
Bob Burow, who co-founded the Brothers in Arms gym 18 months ago with Wade Remington, said it was “almost unheard of” for the same cohort of boxers to win every medal at the Golden Gloves.
“It would not have been done many times before I think – walking away with all four divisions and best senior and junior,” Burow told North West Weekly.
“Our boys are pretty inexperienced compared to a lot of the fighters they were up against. The boys on the coast have a lot more fights they can get to and a lot more gyms they can train at, so that made it even more special.
“Now, we are looking at the next step which is the state titles and the national titles later this year.”
Remington said the Mount Isa fight night had given the boys an extra boost leading into the Golden Gloves.
“The boys were all pumped up from fighting in front of a local crowd in Mount Isa and they were travelling to Townsville on a high,” he said.
“The more fights they have, they more experience they have and the better they get.
“Then they just took it to the next level. They were running on adrenaline.
“Everyone wants to walk away with a Golden Gloves win – that’s the big one and the boys have all trained very hard to get to this point.
“They stepped up and were hungry – they just wanted it.”
Remington said Mount Isa was retaining its place as among the best locations for upcoming talent.
“Other trainers around the state have been phoning us up asking what we do up here in Mount Isa to get that kind of result,” he said.
“The boys are getting offers from other clubs to fight in Sydney and in Toowoomba and all over the place.
“Mount Isa always has had a good reputation, but it’s been a while since we have been competing regularly, so we are definitely back on the map.”
Plans are also underway to host another Brothers in Arms fight night in Mount Isa later this year.
