Heroes honoured at Mount Isa Veteran's Day service
Around 30 people turned out for the Mount Isa RSL sub-branch’s Veterans Day service on Saturday.
Some elderly men came alone and others came with young families – but while they arrived at the ceremony at different stages in their lives, all shared the common bond of service to the nation.
Servicemen and women of conflicts and peacekeeping missions involving Australian military since 1947 gathered at the Mount Isa Cenotaph on Saturday for a small ceremony marking Veterans Day.
Master of ceremonies Jason Corradi said it was inspiring to see the Mount Isa community gather to pay their respects.
“This is an important day for both Vietnam veterans and all other veterans as it provides a chance to reflect and remember their time during these conflicts, the hardships, the losses, camaraderie, the hard and the good times,” he said in his introductory remarks.
“As a community, this day is an opportunity to meet and talk with a veteran – a chance to learn and understand some of their experiences while serving and the importance for peace among nations.
“Their stories will amaze, shock and inspire you – they will make you grieve and laugh.”
Following the service, wreath laying and the Last Post, a morning tea was held at the Irish Club.
