Historic Glendower Station sells for $39.6m at packed auction
There was a big turnout for a property that hadn't been put on the market for nearly four decades.

One of the region's most historic grazing properties has changed hands after almost four decades, with “Glendower” selling under the hammer for $39.6 million at a well-attended Townsville auction on Thursday.
More than 80 people filled the auction room at The Ville as the 32,250-hectare freehold cattle property –held by Clive and Larine Poole for 36 years – was put to market.
Interest flowed from across Queensland, the Northern Territory and New South Wales, with eight registered bidders and multiple active participants vying for the highly regarded Prairie district holding.
The property was ultimately purchased by Patrick and Edwina Hick of Argyle Pastoral Company, Julia Creek, marking a major acquisition in the region’s grazing landscape.
Stockplace Marketing agent Ashley Naclerio said the result reflected both the strength of the market and the quality of the asset.
“Great to see a fabulous result for our vendors, Clive and Larine Poole. It was a well-supported auction which highlights the strength in the rural property market and the calibre of property,” he said.
Glendower was offered to the market for the first time in almost 40 years and drew significant attention for its scale, diversity of country, mix of grass and timber species, and well-established Angus-cross herd. Agents described it as an exceptional breeding and fattening enterprise with immediate cash-flow potential.
Vendor Larine Poole said the family was delighted with the outcome.
“We are thrilled with the outcome of today’s sale. We acknowledge the strength in the market and appreciate the buyer’s support. Glendower is a unique property and is a wonderful home. We wish all the success to the new owners," he said.
The property is also home to the fully approved Prairie Wind Farm project, prompting congratulations from renewable energy developer Windlab.
"Windlab congratulates the new owners of Glendower, host property for the fully approved Prairie Wind Farm project and looks forward to working closely with them on its continued development. With strong renewable energy opportunities ahead, the future for the Flinders region is bright," a company spokesperson said.
Auctioneer Philip Black said competition was strong throughout the bidding.
“It was a very well attended auction of industry representatives with lots of registered bidders that saw a great result after spirited bidding,” he said.
