The days of wrangling paper charts in the most critical part of the hospital are over.

This week, Mount Isa Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) flipped the switch on a digital transformation that will change the way critical care is delivered in the North West.

The ICU has officially “gone live” with Metavision, a world-class clinical information system that replaces paper charts with real-time electronic records.

North West Hospital and Health Service chief operating officer Andrew Quabba said the new system didn't just tidy up paperwork.

It also connects Mount Isa ICU with the Townsville University Hospital ICU, creating a digital bridge between regional and tertiary critical care.

That means faster decisions, safer care, and better outcomes for the sickest patients in our region.

“This is a game-changer for how we deliver intensive care,” Mr Quabba said

“Having instant access to up-to-the-second patient information makes our work faster, safer and smarter. It’s not just technology, it’s lifesaving.”

NWHHS chief executive Sean Birgan said the change brought Mount Isa ICU in line with other facilities across Queensland, ensuring the region's patients benefited from the same digital systems and seamless care.

“This is one of the biggest shifts in ICU care for our region in decades. We’re moving from clipboards to cutting-edge tech, and that means our patients are getting the very best care, backed by the very best information," he said.

Metavision is part of Queensland Health’s broader digital health strategy, moving towards a future where every hospital is connected, and every patient’s story is only a click away.
