Hughenden Country Universities Centre officially opened
Flinders Shire Council celebrated the occasion with locals and dignitaries on Wednesday.
Flinders Shire marked a milestone in local education on Wednesday with the official opening of the Country Universities Centre (CUC) in Hughenden, which already has 17 students enrolled and studying locally.
To celebrate the important step for the region, the facility – which houses both CUC Hughenden and the Flinders Shire Public Library – will now be known as the 4821 Learning Lab, complete with a fresh new logo inspired by Hughenden’s iconic windmill heritage.
Mayor Kate Peddle said the opening – by Member for Traeger Robbie Katter – represented a major boost for local opportunity and community pride.
“The 4821 Learning Lab reflects our commitment to supporting lifelong learning – from early readers in the library through to university students building their future careers,” Cr Peddle said.
“This is about creating pathways for our young people and ensuring education is accessible without leaving home.”
The centre will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week with swipe card access.
CUC Hughenden’s official opening has been welcomed by students who can now pursue higher education without the financial burden of relocating.
Lake McDonald, a current Year 12 student, said: “Being able to study through CUC Hughenden means I can stay close to home and family while pursuing my university degree.
“I won’t have the financial stress of relocating or paying rent, which makes continuing my education much more achievable.”
Breanne Anning, who lives on a cattle property north of Hughenden, is currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Business Law) externally through James Cook University, after previously completing a Law degree on campus.
“The CUC has been a huge support for me – having a dedicated quiet space, reliable internet, and friendly staff who genuinely want you to succeed makes all the difference,” she said.
“It’s a huge opportunity for young people and anyone wanting to upskill without feeling the pressure to leave the community and their home to build a career.
“The CUC opens doors to more education and training that is desirable by potential employers.”
The 4821 Learning Lab brand and logo build on the original Comet windmill-inspired design, reimagined with a refined and versatile approach.
The bold colours and shapes reflect a contemporary and strong learning environment while retaining a playful, educational tone.
The arched frame provides a strong visual container echoing the windmill form, while the name ‘4821’ proudly connects the facility to its Hughenden postcode and community identity.
The CUC and Flinders Shire Public Library within the 4821 Learning Lab are located at 39 Grey Street, Hughenden.
