A once notorious pub in the Gulf is now on the market.

The Karumba Lodge Hotel has been listed for sale through Savills, offering a rare opportunity to acquire a substantial hospitality asset in the fishing and tourism village.

The 50-year-old pub even inspired American rock band the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’s 2006 anthem Animal Bar.

“There is actually a bar called the Animal Bar and it’s in northern Australia, it’s a tiny, one-road dirt town where they don’t get rain for 10 months,” lead singer Anthony Kiedis explained at the time.

“Then at the end of that 10-month period, basically everybody is on the verge of death ... then the first drops of rain start to fall, and it really does kind of rebirth you.”

Savills agents Kath Brassington and Leon Alaban are managing the expressions of interest campaign and highlight the hotel’s strong position within a growing tourism market.

“Karumba is the only town in Queensland with sealed road access to the Gulf,” they said.

“It attracts thousands of visitors each year, especially during the dry season when anglers, wildlife enthusiasts and tourists flock to the region.”
