He may have played 304 games for the Broncos, but that doesn’t mean Sam Thaiday knows a thing about a bucking horse.

However, the proud Torres Strait Islander said he was thrilled to be the ambassador for the Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships and walked away with a greater understanding of the sport and its connection to First Nations culture.

“It’s been pretty damn good actually, I’ve really enjoyed myself,” Thaiday said from behind the chutes, where he was happily subjected to hundreds of “selfies”.

“I’ve definitely caught the bug and will put my hand up next year.”

The retired forward, who was known for his ferocity, said the bravery of the young cowboys and cowgirls left a lasting impression.

“It takes a lot of heart and a lot of guts to jump on the back of a bronc or a bull,” Thaiday said.

“It was great to watch all these, especially these young Indigenous boys and girls, get out there and do what they love doing.

“You can see they really enjoy it. They have a smile on their face; they’re all there willing and happy to help one another out as well, which is brilliant.

“So, yeah, it’s been a great experience for myself and I’m glad I was a part of it.”
