Lawn bowlers from across the North West put their skills to the test on the weekend in the annual Rod Jolly triples tournament.

Hosted by Leichhardt Services Bowls Club, 10 mixed teams took to the greens over five rounds.

Players nominated individually and teams were picked at random.

Three rounds were played on Saturday, with two on Sunday.

North West Queensland District Bowls president Rod Jolly said that forming teams this way gave the newer inexperienced bowlers an opportunity to play with established players, plus a chance to be among the prizemoney.

Just one team went through the weekend undefeated and it happened to have an eclectic mix of bowlers.

Skippered by Alex Murtagh, a former Queensland representative, the triples champions comprised Cloncurry’s Adam Bogdanic, who also celebrated his 56th birthday on Sunday, and Lorraine Walford, a very part-time lawn bowler.

They needed to produce under pressure, though.

Heading into the final end of the final round, Team Murtagh were down by one shot.

But they found an extra gear to not only get the two shots required, but found an extra two to end up winning by three.

The win gave the players $500 apiece – not bad from $70 entry which also included meals!

Team Baker was runner-up, while Team McCrindle was third and Team Jago fourth.

Jolly said it was a great weekend of bowls in Mount Isa and thanked the tournament sponsors for their continued support, the Leichhardt Services greenkeeper Ian Doolan for preparing the green and Graham Von Hoff for organising the event.
