Yvonne Tunney says the LNP will fund a business case for the Savannah Way that’s focused on upgrading the Gilbert River bridge if the party is elected next week.

The candidate for Traeger said the Gulf community had been crying out for improved road and bridge access in the area, but they had been ignored.

“This $500,000 commitment is part of the LNP’s focus on working harder for Queenslanders,” Ms Tunney said.

“The LNP will restore a government that works for you.

“This $500,000 business plan funding will help residents and businesses who use the Savannah Way running from Mareeba to the Gulf.

“These hard-working regional communities deserve to have weather-proof infrastructure, and the LNP understands the needs of these communities.”

The bridge has been a hot topic for residents in communities like Georgetown, Croyton, Normanton, Karumba, Doomadgee and Burketown, which relies on the Savannah Way for essential freight.

Last month, Etheridge Shire mayor and North West Regional Organisation of Councils chair Barry Hughes led a delegation to inspect the Gilbert River bridge, which usually goes underwater in the wet season.

Ms Tunney said the promise of a business case showed her party was taking the issue seriously.

“Unlike Labor and the Katter Party, the LNP will deliver for Traeger. Queenslanders are currently paying far more and getting far less under Labor,” she said.

“Time’s up for Labor’s expensive failures which have overseen $20 billion-plus in project cost blowouts, that could have instead delivered local infrastructure like improvements to the Savannah Way.”
