Mount Isa’s most iconic vantage point is getting a fresh new look.

As revealed in June this year, Mount Isa City Council will undertake a major revitalisation of the John Campbell Miles Memorial Lookout, transforming it into a safer, more functional and inviting space for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The $4.24 million project, fully funded through the Works for Queensland program, aims to modernise ageing infrastructure while creating a welcoming public space that celebrates the city’s heritage and natural beauty.

Upgrades will include improved lighting, seating, shade structures and pathways, designed to make the lookout more comfortable and accessible for everyone.

Once complete, it will provide new opportunities for leisure, small gatherings and cultural events – all while showcasing one of Mount Isa’s most spectacular views.

A key feature of the project will be the careful restoration of the well-loved World Traveller sign.

The sign, which has long been a favourite photo spot for locals and tourists alike, will be removed, repaired and fitted with new destination markers to reflect Mount Isa’s growing global connections.

Mayor Peta MacRae said the redevelopment reflected the council’s commitment to improving community spaces and enhancing the city’s liveability.

“The lookout is a place everyone in Mount Isa knows and loves,” Cr MacRae said.

“These improvements will make it safer, more comfortable and more accessible for locals and visitors alike. It’s about creating spaces that bring people together and reflect the pride we all have in our city.”

The lookout will be closed to the public from today (November 12) to June 30 next year while construction is underway.
