This year’s Mount Isa Motor Show is shaping to be the biggest one on record, with car enthusiasts quick to respond to prizemoney increases for this year’s event.

Mount Isa Motorsports and Recreation Inc spokesperson Nadia Cowperthwaite said Buchanan Park would have around 100 vehicles on display.

“We’ve doubled our prize money, so we’re expecting even more entries than our normal 80,” she said.

“Already, we’ve had more entries than we normally would a week out.

“Mount Isa’s not just rodeos and mining, there’s a lot of motoring enthusiasts here. A lot of people have things tucked away in their garages or in their backyards and they’re happy to bring them out.

“It’s shaping up to be an exciting day.

“We’ve even got people coming from Townsville that have already booked in.”

The grand champion will receive $1000 and a giant trophy, Ms Cowperthwaite said.

Complementing the car show will be Father’s Day markets, giving Mount Isa locals and visitors a chance to get some shopping done in time for dad’s big day.

Entry is just $5 for adults and funds go towards Mount Isa Motorsports and Recreation Inc, which it hopes to one day put towards a dedicated motorsports precinct in the Outback city.

“I don’t have any updates,” Ms Cowperthwaite said.

“There’s not been a subcommittee meeting in a while.

“We just keep raising money and hopefully one day the Motorsports and Rec Club will be able to actually get our own facility.

“If we had our own area, that would be great and we can finance it from there.

“I’m not sure what is happening with the council at this point.”
