Mount Isa gets a feral pig officer to help combat pests
The feral pig coordinator will take aim at managing the destruction caused by the introduced species.

A feral pig coordinator will be based in Mount Isa as the state government ramps up efforts to contain the growing problem.
Minister for Primary Industries Tony Perrett said the LNP government was delivering $2 million in new funding to help manage the feral pig burden on regional communities.
He said that after years of Labor neglect, feral pig populations had exploded, causing severe damage to agriculture, the environment and waterways.
Half of the new investment will be spent on a Queensland Feral Pig Action plan developed with key stakeholders and designed specifically for different regions.
The other half of the funding will go towards developing new feral pig control methods over the next three years.
Earlier this year, state-funded regional feral pig coordinators hit the ground in six Queensland regions – including Mount Isa – working to reduce numbers and monitoring on-ground efforts.
“We need to make a dent in feral pig populations, not only to protect primary production but to mitigate biosecurity risks,” Mr Perrett said.
