The Cloncurry Hospital has a new regional director of medical services after Dr Jillian McClimon started on Monday.

Dr McClimon brings with her a wealth of experience in rural and remote medicine, holding a fellowship with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine, and advanced skills in emergency care.

She has relocated to Cloncurry with her husband and young son and says she is excited to continue her career in a community she describes as “resilient, welcoming and proud”.

“I started out as a junior doctor in Mackay and had placements across Bowen, Dysart, Collinsville and Clermont, so I’ve always had a strong connection to rural communities,” Dr McClimon said.

“For the past eight years, I’ve been based at Sarina Hospital, where I’ve spent the last two years acting as medical superintendent.

“I’ve always had a passion for rural and remote health and knew early on that this was where I was meant to be.”

Dr McClimon has held various clinical and leadership roles across the Mackay region and is recognised for her work in trauma care, emergency medicine, and antimicrobial stewardship.

She is also a qualified forensic medical examiner, with training in forensic and rural health settings.

North West Hospital and Health Service’s acting executive director of medical services, Dr Arnel Polong, said Dr McClimon’s appointment marked an exciting new chapter for Cloncurry.

“Dr McClimon is a highly regarded rural generalist with a deep commitment to community-based care,” Dr Polong said.

“Her leadership as regional director of medical services will bring stability, clinical excellence, and vision to Cloncurry Hospital and beyond.

“We’re thrilled to welcome her to the North West.”

North West Hospital and Health Service chief executive Sean Birgan said Dr McClimon’s appointment highlighted the service’s ongoing ability to attract high-quality medical professionals.

“North West HHS continues to successfully recruit experienced senior medical staff to our rural and remote communities, and Dr McClimon’s appointment is a great example of this,” he said.

“Her leadership and experience will provide strong support for both the Cloncurry Hospital team and the broader health service.”

Mr Birgan said North West HHS extended its sincere thanks to Dr Cameron Hoare, who previously supported the Cloncurry community in a dual hospital and private practice role prior to his departure in June.

He said the service also looked forward to continuing its partnership with Dr Michael Clements, who will provide ongoing support to the local community.

Dr McClimon said her family was settling in well and looking forward to embracing life in the Outback.

“We’ve been made to feel so welcome since arriving, and I’m excited to be part of such a strong and vibrant community,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to know my patients and working with the Cloncurry team to deliver great care.”
