New Normanton Hospital officially opened by Governor
The state-of-the-art hospital represents a significant investment in the Gulf community.

The Normanton community turned out in force last week to mark a major milestone for the Gulf, celebrating the official opening of the new Normanton Hospital – a purpose-built, modern facility set to transform local healthcare for generations to come.
Her Excellency, the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young, Governor of Queensland, officially opened the new hospital at a community event attended by Elders, staff, and leaders from the North West Hospital and Health Service.
The state-of-the-art hospital represents a significant investment in rural health, with expanded services, upgraded clinical spaces, and a culturally welcoming design that reflects the identity and spirit of the Gulf region.
North West Hospital and Health Service acting chief executive Andrew Quabba said the new facility was a game-changer for both patients and staff.
“This new hospital means so much to the people who live and work here. It gives our teams the space and tools to do their best work and makes it easier for locals to get care without travelling hundreds of kilometres," he said.
"It’s been a real community effort from start to finish, and something everyone should be proud of."
Built by Hutchinson Builders, the project was shaped through extensive consultation with local government, Traditional Owners and health consumers to ensure the facility met the needs and values of the region.
The new Normanton Hospital includes a fully equipped emergency department, 18 inpatient beds, private consultation rooms, a dental surgery, pharmacy and x-ray services, and an ambulance bay.
Designed with the Gulf climate in mind, the building features wide shaded verandas and open spaces to promote comfort and connection.
A renal dialysis unit is also on the horizon, with plans for it to open next year, bringing life-saving treatment closer to home for patients who currently travel long distances for care.
To mark the official opening, the Normanton community sealed a time capsule containing contributions from staff, students and residents – preserving a snapshot of life in the Gulf in 2025 to be opened in 50 years’ time.
