While some landscaping has yet to be finished, the new Normanton Hospital will open next week.

Normanton's new hospital will open its doors to the public next week.

The purpose-built facility includes 18 beds and is designed to deliver high-quality, contemporary healthcare for the community.

The single-storey, air-conditioned facility spans approximately 22002 metres and comprises a main building with two connected wings.

The hospital will provide 24-hour acute inpatient and emergency care.

Key features include:

  • A fully equipped emergency department;

  • 18 inpatient beds;

  • Private consultation rooms;

  • Dental surgery;

  • Pharmacy and x-ray services;

  • Ambulance bay;

  • Covered verandas; and

  • A renal dialysis unit, which is planned to open in 2026.

The delivery of the hospital’s modular units from Toowoomba was a major logistical achievement.

The 2000km journey involved a rotating fleet of eight trucks carrying loads over 19 metres long and weighing more than 20 tonnes.

North West Hospital and Health Service chief executive Sean Birgan said the operational opening of the new hospital was a significant step forward for the Normanton community.

“The new Normanton Hospital is a modern, purpose-built facility that delivers safe, high-quality healthcare much closer to home,” he said.

“We’re proud to be improving healthcare infrastructure in the Gulf, and even prouder of the people behind it.”

Normanton director of nursing Katherine Stock said the new facility marked a major milestone for local healthcare.

“We’re so excited to open the doors and show our community what we’ve been working towards,” she said.

“This new facility is designed to strengthen and continue the delivery of quality healthcare in Normanton, making sure our community can keep receiving the care they need, close to home.”

From next Wednesday, all hospital services will operate from the new building.

Mr Birgan said he was thrilled with the outcome for Normanton.

“The public will probably take for granted the backup electricity supply and the plumbing and the air conditioning unit ... you won’t see that from the front end,” he said.

“The gardens have started to be fitted out with plants and there’s a memorial area that the community requested to be a part of the hospital design with sitting areas for people to communicate and have a yarn outside.

A formal opening ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 29 to mark the occasion and celebrate with the community.
