The final prefabricated modules for the new Normanton hospital have been delivered to the Gulf community, with the health facility expected to officially open its doors in the second half of the year.

About 40 modules, some measuring 20 metres long and four metres wide, travelled as part of a rotating convey of eight trucks that took three-days for each trip.

The initial outfitting of the modules was completed in Toowoomba late last year and overseen by Health Infrastructure Queensland before the northward haul to the Gulf, which began in the final week of January.

A North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS) spokesperson said careful planning was needed to navigate the month-long transportation operation amid flooded road conditions in recent weeks.

“Now the buildings are in position, the fit-out of the buildings is underway and services such as water and electricity will be connected,” the spokesperson said.

“Stairs, ramps and other structures will also be installed, and landscaping works will commence.”

The new facility spans about 2200m2 and comprises a main building with two connected wings.

The single-storey, air-conditioned facility will include an emergency department, 18 inpatient beds, including one and two bedroom units, private consultation rooms, dental surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, x-ray facilities, ambulance bays and covered verandas.
