North West councils back proposed purchase of Rex
NWQROC says the deal brings much-needed optimism after years of uncertainty.

North West leaders have welcomed the sale of Rex Airlines to US-based Air T Inc, saying it’s a promising step toward more reliable and consistent air services for the region.
The North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils says the deal brings much-needed optimism after years of uncertainty for regional air travel.
NWQROC chair and Etheridge Shire mayor Barry Hughes said communities across the North West depended heavily on Rex flights – for business, tourism, healthcare, education, and simply staying connected.
“Reliable air connectivity is essential to our communities. We rely on dependable air services for business, tourism, access to health and education, and overall liveability,” Cr Hughes said.
“Air passenger services are critical to our communities which includes some of the nation’s most remote and vulnerable. They play a direct role in supporting local businesses, attracting workforce and investment, and ensuring residents remain connected to the services they need.
“We are ready to get behind this next chapter for REX, recognising the great opportunities that are available for its new owners to harness with continued improvement and investment in the regions.
“We acknowledge the support of the Albanese government and Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King in working towards a positive outcome for regional aviation during this administration process."
Cr Hughes said NWQROC remained committed to advocating for sustainable and reliable air passenger services that keep the North West connected and competitive.
“The Australian government’s announcement this week of a Productivity Commission inquiry into regional airfares is also welcome news. We are keen to contribute and ensure the voices of North West Queensland communities are heard to deliver the equitable services and prices we deserve,” he said.
“NWQROC also looks forward to working with the Queensland government through the review of Queensland’s Regulated Air Routes scheduled for early 2026.
“We will continue to advocate strongly to ensure our region receives its fair and equitable support similar to the benefits enjoyed by metro Queensland commuters through subsidised public transport.
“Improved air services will help unlock economic growth, strengthen tourism, support workforce attraction, and create opportunities across current and emerging industries."
