Boom horse Just Stop It is set to venture into open company for the first time at Cloncurry in what will be the gelding’s biggest test in his short career.

The six-year-old gelding, who has had just nine starts – all of them this year – has been entered in the Brodie Hardware & Rural Open Handicap, where he should be a short-priced favourite based on the early nominations.

However, the horse with six wins from seven starts under Julia Creek trainer Tanya Parry will step up to 1200m for the first time.

Five of his victories have been over 1000m, while his last win was at his home track over 1100m.

Mount Isa jockey Terrence Hill is expected to take the ride, having secured a day off work to make the trip east, and said he didn’t think the six furlongs would be an issue for the speedster.

“The way he’s been racing says to me he can go further,” Hill said.

“I’m still not sure we’ve seen the best of him.”

There are five races on the non-TAB program at Schumacher Park, with the first expected to jump around 1pm.

As expected, Julia Creek is well represented at the meeting through Parry and Kerry Krogh, while a number of Mount Isa trainers have set their horses for the harder and faster Cloncurry track.

Another highlight on the card will be the Judy Keyes and John Bulley Memorial race, a Benchmark 65 event over 1400m with a $12,000 purse.

Seven different trainers have nominated horses for the race.
