Brothers In Arms Boxing was so buoyed by the success of its first fight night that the club is already making plans to host another event later this year.

The boxing gym’s co-founder Wade Remington said more than 500 fight fans went through the gate at the Mount Isa Rugby Union grounds on Sunday, which was much higher than anticipated.

“We didn’t really know what the turnout was going to be,” Remington told North West Weekly.

“We knew there were a few other events on the weekend, but not everyone goes away for the long weekend, so we were pleased to see who turned up.

“Boxing has always been a big draw card for Mount Isa and it’s great to see all the community support and the feedback from people who came along.

“It seems like everyone was happy to see a boxing event like this in town.”

There was a stellar atmosphere at the fight event, with specially constructed grandstands placed around the elevated boxing ring that was lit by the heavy floodlights overhead. Starting when the sun was still up and running through until almost midnight, there were 16 bouts that featured 14 Mount Isa and Cloncurry amateurs.

Remington said it displayed the growing talent among the local amateur ranks in the city.

“Taiarn Yasserie had two fights on the night and he got up in both of his,” he said.

“I think Lincoln Peterson’s fight was probably the best of the night – we really showed some of the best the city has to offer.”

Remington said the money raised from the event would assist to fund the travel and accomodation expenses of local fighters travelling to Townsville for the Golden Gloves at the end of the month.

“We have to travel 900km minimum to be able to get our guys to a fight so it was good to have so many other boxers come out to Mount Isa this weekend,” he said.

“All our boys that fought on Sunday will now be competing at the Golden Gloves.”
