Flinders Shire mayor Kate Peddle says local communities must define the legacy that renewable projects will leave across the region.

Hughenden is preparing to host the Queensland Community Renewables Forum on May 30, which will focus on future economic development and local priorities from proposed projects across the Flinders Shire.

It follows the state government’s intention to introduce a community benefit clause to all new renewable energy projects.

The free forum is open to all residents and will bring together community, renewable energy developers, government representatives and the agriculture sectors for meaningful discussion about the local contribution of the renewables industry.

It will build on information gleaned from forums held in the Western Downs, Maranoa and Isaac regions over the past year.

Cr Peddle said locals must be prioritised in the conversation around new projects.

She said informing the community about the burgeoning renewables industry was crucial to ensuring the region reaped the maximum benefits

Queensland Renewable Energy Council CEO Katie-Anne Mulder said the forum would allow industry to have early, open and honest discussions.

“It is great to bring everyone together in one place to hear about renewables in the region – what opportunities and challenges development presents, and to start the discussion of what it’s going to mean for the region,” she said.

Coexistence Queensland CEO Warwick Squire said the forums equipped landholders with the tools they needed to work with an energy company.

“It’s vital for all parties to have access to factual, reliable information as we navigate the opportunities and impacts of renewable energy development in the region,” he said.

The Queensland Community Renewables Forum will be held on May 30 at the Diggers Entertainment Centre in Hughenden.
