Kash Turner is hoping his luck has turned around after a month of misfortune.

After a recent run of bad luck, Kash Turner is hoping a win at Richmond can turn his fortunes around on the Northern Run rodeo circuit.
After a recent run of bad luck, Kash Turner is hoping a win at Richmond can turn his fortunes around on the Northern Run rodeo circuit.

Kash Turner says he’s hoping to follow the footsteps of his mum and claim a prestigious Mount Isa Rodeo buckle as he embarks on his first Northern Run as an open bull rider.

A winner at Richmond last Saturday, Turner is enjoying his time in the North West as he prepares for a busy period that will take him to Cloncurry, Mount Isa and Townsville over the next three weeks.

A buckle at Mount Isa is still the dream, though, he said.

“It actually would mean a fair bit to me being that my mum won the breakaway roping there when she was pregnant with me,” he told North West Weekly.

Kerry Turner was the Mount Isa Rodeo breakaway roping champ in 2006 and on February 19 the following year, Kash was born.

While the young cowboy has yet to compete in an open bull ride at Buchanan Park – you have to be 18 to do so – he was runner-up in last year’s second division bull ride, falling short to the dominant Matt Ahern, who won just about every second division prize last year.

Kash is also hoping his luck has changed with the recent win.

About a month ago he nearly lost an ear when a bull stood on it, and about a month before that, he had a few teeth knocked out.

“That’s just part of the sport,” the enthusiastic teen said.

“The ear is looking pretty good now, they stitched it back together, so I’m all good.”

Kash will next be seen on Friday night at the Xtreme Bulls at the Curry Merry Muster.
