Cloncurry Shire Council has awarded the tender for the replacement of the Coppermine Creek bridge.

The replacement will see the existing bridge replaced with a dual-lane connection, which will also feature a footpath.

In November, Cloncurry Shire secured $5 million in funding towards the project from the federal government through the Bridges Renewal Program and the remainder of the $7.3 million project will be covered by the council.

Mayor Greg Campbell said the council identified the Coppermine Creek Bridge replacement as a priority project in its 2021-26 Corporate Plan, recognising the need to upgrade the asset to improve useability and safety.

“Residents and businesses use the bridge continuously. The upgrade will offer a wider, safer bridge and deliver pedestrian access for residents of all abilities,” he said.

Successful tenderer Davbridge Constructions will take possession of the site in August, with works expected to begin shortly afterwards.

During construction works, temporary pedestrian access will be put in place and there will be detours for vehicles.

Cr Campbell said the council was encouraged by the high calibre of response to the tender, from experienced tenderers.

“Davbridge Constructions have a good reputation in the area, with recent piling works completed for the Butcher’s Creek bridge upgrade for the Department of Transport and Main Roads, as well as with the Einasleigh River Bridge and Copperfield Bridge in Etheridge Shire,” he said.

“We look forward to working with them on this project.”

Council has engaged SMEC to provide project management and construction services support throughout the project.

The bridge is scheduled to be open again by June 2025.
