Study could speed up vanadium-mining projects in the North West

A new study has the potential to reduce assessment timeframes for new critical-mineral mines in the Richmond and Julia Creek region.

The nine proposed vanadium projects in the Julia Creek and Richmond area could create up to 1740 construction jobs and 1697 operational jobs.

A new study that has the potential to reduce assessment timeframes for new critical-mineral mines in the Richmond and Julia Creek region by up to two years has been officially released.

The Julia Creek/Richmond Critical Minerals Zone (CMZ) Social Baseline Study examines the social and economic impacts of proposed mining developments - particularly vanadium projects - in the region.

According to the study, full development of the nine proposed vanadium projects in the Julia Creek/Richmond CMZ could create up to 1740 construction jobs and 1697 operational jobs.

The study forms part of a broader package of baseline studies being undertaken with other state government agencies as part of efforts to streamline mining approvals, potentially speeding up project assessments by as much as two years.

Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last said North West Queensland is rich in critical-minerals deposits.

“The study released today looks at what impacts will be felt in the region if a few or all proposed vanadium projects become operational by 2031,” Mr Last said.

“This baseline data equips both proponents and regulators with vital insights into the potential impacts on local communities, to support ongoing work to create lasting community benefits.

“This work helps project proponents, local community stakeholders, and government agencies avoid duplication so they can get on with their developments faster.

“That means jobs can be created faster and North West Queensland communities can see the benefits of critical minerals investment earlier.”
