Tigers give Buffs a fright to spark life into AFL Mount Isa season

Could there be a third contender in the local competition?

Traditional rivals, the recent matches between Tigers and Buffs had lacked a little fire, but Saturday’s game at Legend Oval was an exception.
Traditional rivals, the recent matches between Tigers and Buffs had lacked a little fire, but Saturday’s game at Legend Oval was an exception.

Thoughts that the Mount Isa AFL competition was a one, or two team affair were extinguished at Legend Oval on Saturday as the Tigers breathed life back into the local footy season.

Boasting their strongest line-up of the season, the Tigers led at the first two breaks, holding a 13-point buffer at half-time, but couldn’t withstand a third term blitz from the undefeated Buffs, who piled on five goals to two to lead by seven heading into the final stanza.

The premiership favourites had superior fitness late in the game to hold off the Tigers’ surge, winning 11.10 (76) to 9.8 (62).

While Buffs are still the team to beat, the Tigers’ performance will buoy the team heading into this week’s bye and for the remainder of the season.

In the other match, the Lake Nash Bats fended off a depleted Dajarra Rhinos side, which had to be filled by opposition players backing up from the Buffs-Tigers contest.

The Bats won by 12 points.
